A large percentage of light bulbs that a person encounters daily in everyday life just meet the E27 standard. For large areas, more powerful lighting devices are already needed.

Advantages and disadvantages

Choosing lighting scheme for their home, people often decide to use a standard plinth type E27. And this is not strange, because it has many advantages:

  1. Popularity. The main "competitor" for E27 today is E14, both sizes are available in almost every store. No need to order a rare type of light bulb online.
  2. Price. The mass character of the goods and inexpensive components make it accessible to everyone. Products with an E27 base are inexpensive.
  3. Range. Incandescent lamps are sold with such a base, LED, halogen and energy saving models. Each manufacturer also has E27, so you can choose a lighting fixture for quality and cost.

  4. Does not deform. The Edison base, including size 27, is a very durable construction, the shape of which is not affected by temperature changes or shaking during transportation.
  5. Power. With such a base, there are devices even for 300-350 W, which is enough even for a relatively small production.

Flaws:

  1. Possibility of corrosion. If the base begins to rust in the lamp, then it will not be easy to pull it out later.

  2. There are low quality items. The range of lamps of this size is really large, there are even models of very low quality from little-known manufacturers.

When buying a lamp, you need to take into account the conditions of its operation; for outdoor use, it is better to take special moisture-resistant options.

Key features of the E27 base

The E27 base is really widespread, and has many advantages. But you can recognize it among others primarily by its characteristic design and size.

Design

A glass or plastic flask can have almost any shape, but the base itself is a standard cylinder with threaded threads. It is with the help of this thread that it is screwed into cartridge lamp.

The connecting part of the cartridge is made of metal or ceramic, it has contacts that transmit electricity to the light bulb. There are electrodes on the base, they take this electricity and pass it on to the filaments or the board. An additional element in the design is a shtengel, its function is to pump out air.

Dimensions

It is almost impossible to find out the size of the connection by the light bulb itself. There are models with a small flask, 70 long and 45 mm in diameter, and there are also large options for 180 and 80 mm, respectively. There may also be narrow long lamps or short wide ones.

But the base itself has standard dimensions, which are indicated by its name. The diameter is 27 mm, and the height is almost 26.67 mm.

Marking

In the product labeling, the letter indicates that the device belongs to Edison's inventions, and the number indicates the size (diameter) of the thread. Additionally, the light bulb indicates power in W (watts), voltage in V (volts) and strength luminous flux in Lm (lumens). There is also a manufacturer marking with an emblem or name.

The advantage of this type

Compared to most other options, the main advantage of E27 is its prevalence.If the light bulb fails, it is easy to find in the shops of the city. Replacement is also not a problem, you just need to turn off the light, unscrew thread the old bulb and screw in the new one.

Types of lamps with E27 base, their features

Lamps differ in the principle of operation and performance characteristics. Each of the species is also represented under the E27 marking.

Incandescent lamps

The oldest version of lighting lamps, it was for them that the E27 base was developed, so this size is most often installed in incandescent lamps. As for the technical characteristics, the power is in the range from 15 to 250 W, and the luminous flux is about 10 Lm / W.

Advantages:

  • low price;
  • even light;
  • not afraid of moisture;
  • simple design.

Minuses:

  • high power consumption;
  • short service life;
  • fragility of the flask;
  • heat.

According to the principle of operation, they are similar to incandescent lamps, but in addition, halogen vapor enters the flask. This increases the luminous flux, which reaches 17-20 Lm / W. For halogen models, a plinth marked G is more often used.

Advantages:

  • work at different temperatures;
  • not afraid of moisture;
  • good and uniform light;
  • price.

Flaws:

  • requirements for stable voltage;
  • high power consumption;
  • You can only touch them with gloves.

Video block: What is the difference between the E14 base and E27

What lamps are used

Lamps with E27 base are used for domestic and industrial lighting. They are suitable for desktop, wall, pendant lamps. Size E14 is also used in low and medium power lighting fixtures, including various fixtures and sconces. For powerful outdoor lighting use E40 lamps, they have a power of up to 2000 watts.

Compatibility with other sizes

The connection of the plinth allows, if necessary, to replace the part or carry out repair work. This option is not directly compatible with others, but the problem can be solved using special adapters.

Application of plinth adapters

When you need to insert a lamp into a socket not intended for it, special adapters can be used.They simply allow you to go from size E14 to E27, for example, without loss of power or any other qualities.

But there is also a drawback - the lengthening of the structure, which is not always convenient. If the bulb strongly protrudes from the ceiling, this negatively affects the appearance of the lamp, and there is also an increased risk that the bulb can be accidentally hit and broken. Therefore, the use of adapters is not always advisable.

As for the range of adapters, there will be no problems. They are presented in an assortment in lighting equipment stores, and the necessary adapter can also be ordered on the Internet. Adapters are manufactured by Cosmos, OBI, Lemanso, E.Next and dozens of others. There are even models for combining different types of plinths, for example from G9 to E27 or vice versa. Double type models are available, two lamp sockets can come out at once from one entrance. The cost starts from a dozen rubles and can go up to several hundred.
