LED size 5730 is popular with developers and manufacturers of lighting equipment. The wide application of the product is based on the optimal combination of technical parameters and the cost of a semiconductor device.

Light-emitting diode is produced in the SMD format (leadless) in a package measuring 0.57 x 0.3 cm and is designed for mounting on a printed circuit board from the side of the conductors. Hole drilling is not required.

The LED is available in two versions - with one crystal and with two (sometimes labeled as 5730-1). It is more convenient to divide the characteristics of the led 5730 device into electrical and optical. The electrical parameters for the two versions are summarized in the table.

The most important parameter for the calculation of lighting systems - the luminous flux - is:

  • for single-chip execution 40-50 lm;
  • for two-crystal - 100-120 lm.

The first option corresponds to an incandescent bulb of about 1 W, the second - 2..2.5 W.

The remaining parameters are determined by the design of the light-emitting device, therefore, for two modifications, with sufficient accuracy for practice, they can be taken the same:

  1. The solid angle of radiation is 120 degrees. This means that from each side the light is visible at an angle of 60 degrees.
  2. The emission spectrum can lie in the intervals:
  • 3000-4000K (warm white);
  • 4300 - 4800 K (neutral white);
  • 5000 - 5800 (pure white);
  • 6000 - 7500 (cold white).
  1. Operating ambient temperature - from minus 40 to +85 degrees.
  2. Color rendering index CRI=60..80. The upper value refers to a good level that does not distort the color of furnishings. Refers to products of well-known companies. CRI=60 is not the best option, colors may look unnatural. Cheap LEDs of unknown origin have this parameter value.

Important! The single-chip version of the LED is produced by many manufacturers. There are many products from unknown companies on the market. For such LEDs, the declared parameters do not always correspond to the real ones. The release technology with two p-n junctions is currently available only to leading manufacturers, so the declared characteristics can be trusted.

Scope of application

You can use LED SMD 5730 in the same way as others LEDs similar purpose:

  • as a light-emitting element of spotlights;
  • for use in household lamps for outdoor and indoor use;
  • for use in LED strips (their purpose is artistic lighting, designation of exits, stairs, etc.).

Also, LED can be used in a non-standard way (for example, for indication), especially in amateur designs.

soldering requirements

The manufacturer of the device set the maximum heating temperature during installation - 300 degrees C. This parameter should be taken into account when soldering. If a hair dryer is used, the air temperature should be set within these limits. For soldering, low-temperature pastes should be used.

When using a soldering iron, the temperature of the tip should also be adjusted so that it does not exceed the set limit. When soldering, tweezers can be used as a heat sink, but the contact time between the tip and the LED should not exceed 3 seconds. For installation it is necessary to use soft fusible solders. The manufacturer guarantees the performance of the LED with a single soldering, regardless of the method.

Important! Wood and Rose alloys cannot be used as solder. During operation of the LED, the operating temperature can reach and exceed the melting point of these compounds.

12 volt switching circuit

The forward voltage that the 5730 LED is designed for is 3V, so you cannot directly connect it to a 12V circuit. You need a ballast resistor. It will limit the current in the circuit and extinguish the excess voltage.

It is calculated according to the following algorithm:

  1. The voltage drop across the resistor is calculated - the difference between the supply voltage of 12 V and the voltage drop across the diode (3 V): Ures=Upit-Uled=9 V.
  2. According to Ohm's law, the value of the resistor is calculated: R = Ures / Irab, where Irab is the operating current of the LED, 150 or 300 mA, depending on the LED version. The resulting value does not always fall into the standard range, so you need to choose the closest value.
  3. The power of the resistor is calculated by the formula P \u003d Urez * Irab. The resulting value must be rounded up to the nearest higher standard value.

Turning the LED 5730 string into a 12V circuit

LEDs can be connected in a chain. The total number must be no more than 3 - the limitation is imposed by the supply voltage. Four or more devices from 12 volts cannot be opened, and something else should fall on the ballast resistor. The calculation in this case is not fundamentally different from the calculations when using a single LED, but the formula for the voltage across the resistor must take into account the number of elements:

Ures=Upit-N*Uled, where N=2 or 3, according to the number of semiconductor elements.

Not included in the calculation LED resistance in the open state, but it is small, so it will not fundamentally affect the result.

Important! Due to variation in LED parameters, power supply voltage fluctuations, and resistor nominal resistance errors, it is recommended to measure the actual current through the LED after assembly. If necessary, the resistance of the resistor must be adjusted up or down.

Chains can be connected in parallel, observing two points:

  1. The power of the power supply must be able to withstand the resulting load.
  2. Each circuit must have its own resistor. Connect LEDs in parallel Not recommended. Due to the spread of characteristics, the brightness of the glow will be different. In the worst case scenario, the elements will begin to fail.

A logical question: why don't p-n junctions fail when two or more crystals are installed in one case? After all, they are also installed in parallel. The answer is simple: these elements are made in the same batch, so the spread of their characteristics is minimal.

Convenient for practical use, the shape of the LED lamp is an LED strip that has compact dimensions and a convenient mounting method. Such lighting fixtures are also produced based on SMD LED 5730. They are a flexible base on which LEDs and current-limiting resistors are fixed. The tape can be cut at the marked places.

Important! Do not connect LED strips in series if the total length exceeds 5 meters. Such segments must be connected in parallel, making sure that the total power does not exceed the capacity of the power source.

The parameters of shorter segments can be determined in proportion to the maximum length. Another way is to count the number of LEDs and multiply the parameters of a single element by their total number.
