Socle type E14 - scopes, pros and cons
The minion base is one of the two most popular sizes for household lighting. For a detailed acquaintance with E14, it is necessary to study the scope of its application, the main varieties and nuances of choice.
Marking: what does E14 mean
The designation of light bulb bases in most cases consists of a letter and numbers. In a specific example, the Latin letter "E" is used, it indicates belonging to Edison lamps (screw). The number 14 means the diameter of the circumference of the base itself.
People often make the mistake of thinking that the higher the number, the more powerful the lamp, but this is not true. Sizes are important in compatibility with the lighting fixture, if the fixture has an E14 cartridge, then the same lamp is needed. In extreme cases, you can use an adapter.

As for the scope, the E14 is suitable for domestic tasks. It is used in pendant and wall lamps, table lamps, small sconces. Minions are also used as built-in lighting for household appliances: microwave ovens, ovens, refrigerators.
Comparison of E14 and E27
Plinths of these sizes are the most popular in the household sector, and many do not know what is the difference between them, and which option to choose for lighting your home. In fact, there are not so many differences in performance, but the design difference is the dimensions.
What is the difference:
- Dimensions. Designation lamps speaks of the diameter, if for minions it is 14 mm, then for E27 - respectively, 27 mm.Popular sizes.
- Illumination Angle. It concerns only LED lamps, for minions, due to their compact size, this angle is 360 degrees, and for E27 it is slightly less.
- Where is used. Both sizes are mainly used for domestic purposes, but E27 can also be used in small industrial premises or street lighting, and E14 in household appliances.
Types of E14 lamps, their features
Even in one standard size there are several options for light bulbs with their own design features, cost and principle of operation.
incandescent lamp
The oldest type of lighting elements, its bulb is made of glass, and inside there is a filament. During operation, it produces not the most powerful, but even light.
Energy saving (CFL)

Instead of a traditional glass bulb, the design of such light bulbs is spiral. Inside are mercury vapor, and the spiral helps save space. Energy-saving lamps are capable of producing a luminous flux of up to 70 Lm / W.
Halogen

They work in the same way as incandescent lamps, but with one difference - the flask additionally contains vapors of inert gases. They are the ones that enhance luminous flux.
LED

Light bulbs with high light output and extremely long service life, which can be tens of thousands of hours.
What forms does E14 have
Among Minions, the most popular bulb option is the traditional "candle" and is used in most pendant lights. Its modified version with an elongated top can be found in sconces.
Another option is the "candle flame". These are beautiful and expensive light bulbs, but they are used in interiors where ceiling lamps are not provided, because it makes no sense to close them.
In closed lighting fixtures, the most affordable options are used - “pear”, “ball”, “ellipsoid”. For a complete set of household appliances, lamps with a narrowing to the base are suitable.

How to choose an E14 bulb
There are a lot of light bulbs on the market with the E14 base type. To choose the right option, you need to consider:
- Power. In addition to traditional measurements, many manufacturers also indicate the area for which the light bulb is designed.
- Dimensions, shape. Not only practicality depends on them, but also the cost and decorative component.
- Manufacturing company. It is better to trust well-known companies whose products have a reputation for reliability.
- Network voltage requirements. If the network at home does not match the parameters of the light bulb, then this will adversely affect its efficiency and durability.
- Integrity. Before buying, the product must be removed from the box, inspected for scratches, chips, and other damage.
Additional Information. When buying LED bulbs for the E14 cartridge, they also take into account the glow temperature, power, and the ability to adjust.
Minion Lighting Compatibility
The E14 bulb, when connected directly, will only work with lighting fixtures that have the appropriate chuck size. Otherwise, it will not produce light, even if the dimensions are only slightly different. In such situations, additional adapters are needed.

The use of special adapters
Sometimes situations arise that you need to connect E27, or two, to the minion cartridge. There are special adapters for this, they are inexpensive and do not affect the intensity of lighting, but slightly lengthen the structure. There are adapters between different types of plinths, for example, from G to E.
