Description and application features

The dimensions of the SMD 3528 LED are 3.5mm by 2.8mm. Crystal height 1.4 mm. On each side there are two contacts through which the current passes. In the manufacture, only transparent lenses are used that provide high-quality light transmission.

From the side of the cathode, you can see a special cut on the case. This slice is sometimes called the key. The entire surface of the product is covered with a phosphor, which, in addition to light transmission, has a protective function.

SMD 3528 is classified as a small super-bright LEDequipped with a housing for mounting on different surfaces. The crystal itself is made from a mixture of gallium nitride and indium nitride. It turns out a special structure that creates bright radiation. The composition includes a phosphide based on aluminum, gallium and indium.

The numbers in the model designation indicate the dimensions of the product, so it is easy to imagine the installation of the device in a particular area.

The relatively low cost and ease of installation made it possible to use diodes of this type in many areas of life. Most often they are found as the main components of LED strips, as well as various indicators on devices. They can be seen in backlighting systems, signage, and other areas where a small, bright light source is required.

Based on the LED 3528, many modern devices have been created with three-color RGB backlights and crystals with improved light output.

Parameters and characteristics of species

SMD 3528 LEDs are made on the basis of InGaN (gallium nitride, indium nitride) and AlGaInP (aluminum, gallium, indium phosphate). Most crystals of this type have a color rendering index of 60-80 Ra, and a color temperature range of 3000-7500 K. This is higher than that of the larger SMD 5328. The luminous flux is generated from 5 to 11 Lm.

The light output is 40 lm/W, which makes these LEDs extremely efficient for illuminating small areas. No heat sink is provided, as the crystals cope well with elevated temperatures. The scattering angle is 90 degrees, and the area of ​​light emission is 4-5 mm.

The most comfortable temperatures are considered to be from -40 to +85. And if there are usually no problems with exceeding the upper limit, then too low temperatures can render the crystal unusable.

It is worth noting that the final brightness of light is very dependent on temperature. Operation at temperatures from +60 can reduce brightness by 10%, and exceeding the limit of 80% will cause a decrease in brightness by 25%. This is one of the reasons why cooling is important for semiconductor devices.

During production, products are subjected to binning - the installation of a bin code that determines the color, temperature and lighting coordinates. Some manufacturers accompany their products with special color charts.

During operation, the dissipated power is 100 mW, with a forward voltage of about 3 V. The devices operate with a current not exceeding 25 A.

Flaws:

  • low power, especially in comparison with subsequent developments;
  • inevitable degradation of the crystal with the loss of the necessary properties;
  • the probability of a manufacturing defect, which is difficult to estimate in advance.

How to choose the right one and not fall for a fake

There are quite a few LED 3528s on the market from well-known companies, including such giants as LG, Philips and Samsung. But this did not protect the product from a huge number of fakes with completely different characteristics. To reduce the cost of production, unscrupulous companies often resort to artificially reducing crystals, reducing capacities and operating parameters.

Without experience, it is difficult to determine a fake. But there are a number of features by which a low-quality product is identified:

  1. Base. Counterfeits are often built on aluminum frames, while original diodes use only copper for better thermal conductivity. A comparison of the appearance, as well as weight, will help determine the material. Aluminum is lighter (it is almost impossible to estimate the weight of a small diode without special weights, so it is better to compare large batches of products at once).
  2. Counterfeit diode creators often do not list the number of hours of operation before reducing the flux to 80%, limiting themselves to the total lifetime.
  3. Price. LED 3528 SMD are considered quite affordable. However, their price cannot be lower than some set value. Counterfeit suppliers may supply equipment at extremely low prices, but the quality of the diodes will also be very low.

N denotes the number of LEDs connected in series. Rated current Ipr for 3528 is about 25 mA. Since the calculations may not turn out to be an integer, they usually take a resistor with rounding up.
